Carolyn Hartfield

Bio

Carolyn Hartfield epitomizes the term 'aging gracefully' as evidenced by the recognitions, celebrations and  accolades she continues to receive through the years, since turning age 50 in 1998. Those listed above are the more recent ones.

As a 69 year old Carolyn discovered her athleticism and penchant for sports at age 50 when she started playing organized basketball on a senior women’s team. She traveled across the country playing in various tournaments and competitions, including the National Senior Games, Huntsman World Games, Michigan Senior Olympics and others, where she earned gold and silver medals and other recognitions.

At age 56, after her first hiking experience trekking Blood Mountain in North Georgia, she discovered another passion. A passion for the outdoors! Raised as an urban city girl, Carolyn never knew she had the passion for the outdoors in her! At age 60 she started her own hiking group where she leads monthly group hikes, primarily in the North Georgia Mountains. Hiking brought out her adventurous spirit. She added other group activities that include zip lining, white water rafting, kayaking, camping, bicycle riding, tree climbing, spelunking, backpacking and others.

OPALS – Older People with Active Lifestyles is a group she started in 2009. OPALS is a network of men and women aged 50 and older who are young at heart, enjoy an active lifestyle, are fit (or want to become fit), friendly and have fun participating in athletic and social events with peers. OPALS frequently plans community service events and is intentional about engaging in inter-generational outings, events and teaching projects.

Once Carolyn learned about “Meetup,” a web forum that helps people with like interest meet, Carolyn expanded her network and activities when she established the OPALS “Meetup”, now with 400+ members and established the Atlanta African American Baby Boomers “Meetup” now with 600+ members. Additionally, she shares news about her adventures to her Atlanta African American Adventures “Meetup” group with 3,400+ members of all ages and to subscribers of  her online newsletter called Healthy Living.

REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) invited her to become a Community Partner, as did the Georgia Conservancy. She volunteers with the National Park Service as a member of the Master Ranger Corps in their Trails and Rails program. She is
certified as a National Interpretive Guide. She is also certified in Wilderness First Aid through the National Outdoor Leadership School. She completed the requirements to become an official Outings Leader through the Sierra Club.
Recently, Carolyn earned her Health Coach certificate through Emory University and was trained as a Lay Leader for Stanford University’s Chronic Disease and Diabetes Self-Management Programs.

Carolyn continues to seek new and sometimes challenging adventures each year for her birthday. She lives by her coined phrase: “Seasoned and Savoring in the Spices of Life!” In all that she does, she strives to “live life to the fullest!” and she encourages others to do the same!
